A doomed Macaulay Culkin becomes the object of affection for a little girl (Anna Chlumsky), estranged from her widowed father (Dan Aykroyd). This somewhat daring premise has various emotional buffers to keep young viewers from going into shock from Culkin’s demise, but the film is also not shut off from real feelings. And while the story remains safely predictable, at the end of the day it is stil…

For Student Series Poetry: To a Sad Daughter by Michael Ondaatje

For Student Series Poetry: To a Sad Daughter by Michael Ondaatje

$8.99

To a Sad Daughter appears in Michael Ondaatje’s 11th collection of poetry, Secular Love, published in 1984. In “Coming Through: A Review of Secular Love,” critic Sam Solecki comments that the poems in this book read “more like the chapters of a novel than parts of a collection.” “To a Sad Daughter,” however, can easily be pulled from the rest and enjoyed alone, for it encompasses a theme common in many of our lives and presents it in a striking, not-so-common way: a father’s love for his daughter and his longing to guide her “into the wild world” (line 64) gently, but with eyes wide open. While there have been countless father-daughter poems written over the decades, not many include hockey goalies, purple moods, and Creatures From the Black Lagoon. Ondaatje’s poetry is rich in all forms of human experience, and his use of everyday language and everyday events to define that experience makes his work both compelling and accessible. “To a Sad Daughter” is written while the speaker sits at his daughter’s bedroom desk when she is not present. At one point, he refers to the poem as his “first lecture” to the 16-year-old, but it is a lecture full of love and wonderment and admitted anxiety, not anger and rebuke. While the title identifies the daughter as melancholy or grieving, she is not actually present in the work, and so we must consider the word “sad” as only an interpretation of the father’s. After reading the poem, we may also….

Featuring every track she cut during her short career – such as ‘Sad Girl’, ‘Taking My Mind Off Love’, ‘I’ll Get Off At The Next Stop’, ‘We’ve Got Enough’, ‘Tomorrow Is Not A Promise’ & others – this great tribute album was compiled by David Welding who also wrote the liner notes. Who's Sad?

Who’s Sad?

$14.99

“”Who’s Sad?” extends hope to all who struggle with sadness; through everyday illustrations, Biblical examples, and practical applications. The third study guide in the Awareness to Action series encourages readers to identify sources of sadness, which have compounded to complicate their lives. Continual sadness and depression deplete your energy, your motivation, your enjoyment of life and your physical health. How many times have you heard a pastor or Christian friend say, “God is the answer to all your problems?” How many times have you thought, “Sure? How can that be? My life is in shambles. I have come to the end of my rope. I don’t think God remembers who I am. He seems so distant and unapproachable.” God does love you. Look to Jesus. He felt every emotion as you have. You can have confidence in Him. He knows what He is talking about. You can trust Him. BARBARA L. KING spent her childhood as a missionary’s kid in Trinidad, West Indies. She was 10 years old when her family returned to the U.S. After completing High School, she earned an A.A. degree from Penn Wesleyan College in Allentown, PA., and a B.A. degree in Religion from Marion College, Marion, IN. King married in 1973. She and her husband have three children and three grandchildren. After surviving two major car accidents, she was impressed to write the Awareness to Action series of study guides. King has observed and experienced the ups and downs of emotions. Her objective is to assist Christians living with the negative side of emotions. Christians don’t have to live under their circumstances or emotions. God has provided a better way to live. “Who’s Afraid?” and “Who’s Angry?” are currently available on Amazon.com.Following “Who’s Sad?” the next in series will be “Who’s Loved?”"

Happy Sad

$15.18

Easily Tim Buckley’s most underrated album, Happy Sad was another departure for the eclectic Southern California-based singer/songwriter. After the success of the widely acclaimed Goodbye and Hello, Buckley mellowed enough to explore his jazz roots. Sounding like Fred Neil’s Capitol-era albums, Buckley and his small, acoustic-based ensemble weave elegant, minimalist tapestries around the six Buckley originals. The effect is completely mesmerizing. On “Buzzin’ Fly” and “Strange Feelin’,” you are slowly drawn into Buckley’s intoxicating vision. The extended opus in the middle of the record, “Love From Room 109,” is an intense, complex composition. Lovingly under-produced by Jerry Yester and Zal Yanovsky, this is one of the finest records of the late ’60s. ~ Matthew Greenwald, Rovi Performers: Carter C.C. This Sad Movie

$11.98

Having made a fine mark with the minimal and melancholy bliss-out group Polar, Kristy Moss and Ed Ballinger shift sights slightly, but with equally fine effect, in Con Dolore, accompanied by three new bandmates. The band’s first album, This Sad Movie, is a concept album of sorts but not an overbearing one, detailing the slow collapse of a relationship rather than some kind of explanation of the universe in 40 minutes. As was the case with Polar, there’s much that suggests Black Tape for a Blue Girl’s obsessive romanticism blended with musical elegance and delicacy, though Con Dolore has more of an interest in various dance musics via poppy lounge/funk and breakbeat samples, making a band like, say, Saint Etienne or Lamb as much of a reference point. “Feed Us All” pulls together two generations of electronic fusion, with New Order-reminiscent bass backed by abbreviated drum’n'bass loops on the verses (the chorus itself is one of many points that in turn suggests a kissing cousin to the Smashing Pumpkins’ underrated Adore). Meanwhile, the compressed feedback swells of “Dream” show that there’s still just enough shoegazing in the lead duo’s souls. Moss is again in fantastic voice, acting as the calm but never dull anchor at the center of the songs, detailing the twists and turns of a deep love quietly but inexorably fraying. Ballinger’s own quieter, soft performance isn’t as immediately striking but is no less involving, calling to mind Neil Halstead’s hushed power in Slowdive, but in a different, crisper setting. When the two blend together, as with the astonishing Cure-guitar-tinged “She Said Goodbye,” the results are often intoxicating. The first full tune on the album, “The 7th,” is one of the most majestic, its core loop/keyboard arrangement getting all the more full and rich (and dare it be said, cinematic) as it goes. All this and a song about “All Our Favorite Cats” as well. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi Performers: Wes Snowden – Bass Samples, Guitar (Bass); Ed Ballinger – Autoharp, Triangle, Sampling, Vocals, Keyboards, Piano, Guitar; Patti Wood – Autoharp, Voices, Marimba, Percussion, Drums, Piano; Kristy Moss – Sampling, Vocals

Excerpt: The Ballad of the White Horse is a poem by G K Chesterton about the idealized exploits of the Saxon King Alfred the Great, published in 1911. Written in ballad form, the work is usually considered an epic poem. The poem narrates how Alfred was able to defeat the invading Danes at the Battle of Ethandun under the auspices of God working through the agency of the Virgin Mary. In addition to being a narration of Alfred’s militaristic and political accomplishments, it is also considered a Catholic allegory. Chesterton incorporates a significant amount of philosophy into the basic structure of the story. The poem consists of 2,684 lines of English verse. They are divided into stanzas, typically consisting of 4 to 6 lines each. The p… More:

My life and my beliefs are inseparable and the reason for this book. Each poem has a meaning and a story behind it. I was born in 1964 in North Central Florida. Although everything seemed quite normal at birth, my parents soon realized I had problems. After fourteen years I was diagnosed with Turner’s Syndrome, which is a rare chromosome disorder. Short stature and learning disabilities are associated with this and certain medical problems, as well. Early on, I learned to laugh at myself through life’s ups and downs. I have always enjoyed writing, especially things that I feel passionately about. My religious and moral beliefs were my inspiration for writing about abortion and other issues that I feel are wrong. Many of my poems are love poems. They were written after being disappointed and let down in love. My poems about love, life, growth, disappointments, and happiness. Sometimes life is funny, sometimes sad and heartbreaking. Sometimes we try to get others to see things from our perspective. I hope my readers will enjoy reading the poems as much as I have enjoyed writing them.

I won the Golden Poet Award in 1989 and the Silver Poet Award in 1990 for the poem Letting You Go In God’s Time.” I was sent a beautiful plaque with the following poem: Letting You Go In God’s Time I’m letting go of you and giving you to God. If He feels the time is right, you will be mine, But only in God’s time. If this time never comes, I will soon realize that God above Will send someone He feels is right for me to love, And when this happens you will know, It was then I had to let you go. My experience with losing Tami was very difficult, but through each step, my faith in God has been the cornerstone of my strength and endurance. It is quite an adjustment to live without a loved one, but there is hope when you put your trust in God. I think about Tami daily and I know she is with me in spirit. One day I will see Tami again, and I believe all of us will reunite with our loved ones. I hope this book will encourage, help you feel a glimmer of hope and give you strength through difficult times. I know you will rise above sad times and find the good in goodbye.”

“In My Eyes”, is a great book of poetry. With a different tone to each word, as well as a unique style to each page. The book, is about life, love, hate, drama, dreams, sad, and deep poetry. I&tacute;s about good and bad men, and how the justice system declines good people, causing them hurt and suffering. The book contains poems, about a girl overcoming her pain and hurt for a guy, and being happy, while the guy is miserable and chasing her. And, about a man making a woman feel one of a kind, and beautiful in every way.Next, therés a lot about the pain, young and mature people go through. The book also contains poems about finding true love, the mistakes we make when we are in love, and crushes. Also, the feeling of writing, and dreaming. The book also contains a poem about, how God sacrificed his only son because of his love for us all. There are also poems about gangsta and thug boyfriends/girlfriends, and what they go through because of the dangerous life they live. Also, there is a poem about the 1915 Armenian Genocide, which might make everyone understand the scars it left on us Armenians. This book, is a combination of both the young and the mature. This book will help girls/guys understand how each girl/guy feels when it comes to love. It will also help to understand how most people today think, feel, and live. “In My Eyes”, got i&tacute;s name from one of the poems in the book, which is based on Narine Chamichyańs(the poe&tacute;s), real life. I&tacute;s about how a young girl, along with her entire family is going through so much hurt and pain because of people who have money, and buy justice workers, turning everyone against them, and how shéll fight till her last breath to prove all of this to the whole world. Its more than just unfathomable words and unbelievable rhymes. I&tacute;s outstanding characters and unique questions and answers. There´s so much this book is about but so much little time to explain. Get a copy

According to Albert Goldbarth, Author, To Be Read in 500 Years and many more poetry collections; two-time winner, National Book Critics Circle award, “The ’slim striped dirt-colored frog / in the first flush of deadnetle, milweed / and bindweed unmaking the hollyhock bed” might be Annie Dillard by way of Gerard Manley Hopins . . . but in fact it’s Suzanne Kay Miller, whose poem-document on life lived both in and away from a Mennonite community proves to us over and over how ‘You might imagine eternity / in local terms,’ the mandate of so much moving poetry, and the lovely presiding spirit of her own.” Darcy A. Zabel, Professor of English, Friends University, says that “Pop psychologists call it baggage-the memories, the feelings, both happy and sad, that stick with us, and haunt us, but author Suzanne Miller rightly observes that really, it’s storage issues-how much room do you have in a life for happiness, for joy, for love and for the pain that sometimes comes with great love and loss?” Raylene Hinz-Penner, Author, Searching for Sacred Ground: The Journey of Chief Lawrence Hart, Mennonite, observes, “‘To live as an island in a sea of wickeness, even with God, leaves one dry.’ Empathizing here with the thirst of Noah, Miller explores that ‘dryness’ that is the human plight, especially the generations of woman-pain: mothering, a husband’s betrayals, brokenness, like that of the trees. The poet’s voice reminds me, when it breaks into praise, of Hopkins in its formality-and sometimes, in its disappointment with the world, as anguished as a Sexton or a Plath.”

The Ballad of Old Windrush Cave with Backwater Blues by Josh Rogan

$18.95

New – This is a coupling of two of Josh Rogan’s stories, although one is in verse form. The first, ‘The Ballad of Old Windrush Cave’ is a rollicking good adventure poem set in the days of pirates and highwaymen and Landlord’s daughters, and is set to rhyme. Young Molly Kent goes off to picnic in a cave which becomes a death trap at full tide, and is the start of a love story and adventure, of happy times and sad times, and there is more than a splash of danger. ‘Backwater Blues’ is a more modern

 Tryst

Tryst

$15.95

In her poem Love Letters, Angie Estes writes, I cover secrets, break me and read. And indeed, throughout Tryst, Estes” fourth and most personal collection, the poet gets straight to the heart of love, language, and memory. Details from the rural Appalachian lives of Estes” own family yield to meditations on ”40s film stars, medieval saints, ancient Romans–and vice versa. We learn that gold leaf is applied with a brush fashioned out of squirrel tail, Nijinsky invented a fountain pen he called God, and female prisoners of the concentration camp at Terezin composed recipes to be tasted only in memory: all part of the human passion to create, destroy, and above all, be known. Estes” tryst here is with history and the way it absorbs everything and everyone, leaving words, those most articulate of witnesses, behind. Like the Roman Forum with its dizzying strata of time exposed, Tryst is layered, sad, magnificent, and made memorable in and because of language. Break. Read.

USED: I Died Today

$7.99

I Died Today was the first release of Tzadik’s Lunatic Fringe series, a category reserved for only the most unclassifiable recordings. It offers 26 of the songs that Rodney Eskelin (who worked most frequently under the name Rodd Keith) recorded while working in the song poem, or send-us-your-lyrics business during the ’60s and early ’70s. Keith composed the music for these lyrics on the spot, and led a group of musicians through recording sessions of first takes. Regarded as a musical genius by many who met him, Keith’s song poem work is the only documentation of his output. This sampling includes a range of rock styles from innocent sugar pop to garage rock, from the New Christy Minstrels to the Doors, featuring Keith on various keyboards and on lead vocals for most of the cuts. His delivery on “This” and “Waiting for the High Tide” is reminiscent of Scott Walker minus the meaningful lyrics. In fact, there’s a hilarious amount of awful lyrics such as “Frankenstein was catching lightning bolts/to save his soul,” (“Graveyard Rock”); the pitiable sentiments of “T.V. Love”: “loving words don’t mean a thing, for you are always on the screen; ” or “Space”’s befuddling incitements to “fly on little spacemen, fly on.” Almost parody, Keith does what he can to stay true to the lyrics’ mood, as with “General Custer’s Story Remains Legend” lyrics (including “when Custer lay so very still,/his faithful horse was very sad”) delivered in an appropriately exaggerated drawl and a Kossoy Sisters-style backing harmony. Some of the other material ranges from American-dream pathos, to inane Do-the-(fill in the dance name) ditties. Unexpected moments of brilliance are scattered throughout, lifting this album out of the realms of kitsch into that of full-blown cult status. ~ Joslyn Layne, Rovi
